Toniyah Made It Crochet Boutique, created and directed by Toniyah Mone Smalls, officially launched in 2025, although it hasn’t always been glitz and glam, the story begins with a trail of tears
After completing her first year in college, Toniyah planned on spending the first few months of summer vacation with her aunt, Tesia Jenkins and grandmother, Janice Jenkins, in Atlanta, GA. Just a month shy of her departure, Toniyah was given some unfortunate news that would change her life forever. While chatting outside with some of her colleagues, Toniyah received a phone call from her parents telling her that her grandmother had past away due to reasons unknown. Toniyah had been very close to her grandmother and took the news very hard. She spent weeks grieving with family before finally deciding that she would still visit her aunt in Atlanta. Upon arrival her aunt was more than happy to share some of the beloved items that her grandmother had left behind. While rummaging through some of her grandmother’s old things, she stumbled upon her yarn collection and crochet hook set. Before passing, Janice would spend her days crocheting beautifully crafted blankets of all different shapes and sizes. She wanted to hold on to her grandmother’s yarn for as long as she could, so she decided to learn a completely new skill and got started making a blanket from her grandmother’s leftover Red Heart yarn. Toniyah spent hours on YouTube learning how to crochet so that she would always have a piece of her grandmother here with her. Although it took her a few months, she had finally gotten the hang of it!
Overtime, Toniyah noticed other crochet projects in the suggested YouTube section and was surprised to see that you could not only make blankets from yarn, you can create an entirely new wardrobe! She started with the basics, learning how to make bralettes, crop tops, and headbands and before you could say “Hook” she had found a new passion for crocheting clothes! After sharing her latest creations online, many women began to like the vibrant colors and patterns she was creating and wanted to get one for themselves. At first Toniyah only planned on creating clothes for herself, she had no idea that other woman would be interested in wearing the designs she created by her own hands.
Since then, Toniyah has been exploring new techniques, patterns, and ideas to enhance her pieces and create looks that make woman look and feel their best. The mix of passion, vibrancy, with a pinch of sass, makes Toniyah’s clothes a number pick for women to add to their closet. The feeling of wearing a unique, handmade garment is unmatched.
